“Ship in the Harbor” (in its original form), was written by Chris Williamson in the 1970’s. My friend Luce’ and I had been singing it for years prior to my move to High Point, NC in 1982; but I was confused when the Lord led me to sing it at a small church service. Though beautiful and gentle, I could not see why He would want me to sing it in that context. My memory is not clear about many details of my life, but I remember that evening very clearly. The service was starting at 6 p.m. and I was to sing at 6:20. The Lord and I seemed to be at an impasse.
It must have been “suddenly” but I honestly have no idea how He did it. Between 6 and 6:20 p.m. He simply gave me a “bridge:” a gentle call from the Savior to “Come unto Me…” At 6:20, I stood up and sang the song, with the “bridge,” and I have sung it hundreds of times since then. “Ship in the Harbor “by Chris Williamson:
“Like a Ship in the harbor, like a mother and child, like a light in the darkness, I’ll hold you awhile; We’ll rock on the water: I’ll cradle you deep; and hold you while angels, sing you to sleep.”
The “bridge:” “He said, ‘Come unto Me, all ye who are weary,…weak and lowly,…and heavy laden; And I will give you…My comfort and victory,…and I will hold you…and give you My rest.'”
Beautiful!
